The purpose of my work is to glorify the name of Jesus Christ. I also desire to challenge the church and the art world to further their search for quality artwork while directing them towards the Lord. It is my privilege to create work that speaks not only about God’s overwhelming goodness, but about the human experience, and the physical world around us.

In all of my work, whether it is a painting, photography, or dance choreography / performance the point is to take the viewer on a journey. This journey can be many things to many different people, but for me the journey is never to far away from reality. I believe that my work holds an emotional conviction that remains somewhat simplistic within the works complexity, and it is always genuine. The majority of my work focuses on seeing the world through a distorted point of view, a quality that resembles abstraction but is always seeking to be understood through careful use of structure. I find a great deal of pleasure in extremes and find that high contrasting colors, textures, and ideas translate emotional qualities extremely well. For example, in my paintings, drawings, and photographs, one would observe that I stick to monochromatic color schemes, usually black and white, or to the opposite extreme, bold opaque colors. I stray far away from translucent or even uses of color and texture. When it comes to choreography, in a similar fashion, my favorite qualities tend to be built upon extremes. The use of minimalist ideas like repetition, opposition, and juxtaposition allow an abstracted idea to find concreteness. In doing so, I find the ability to relate to an idea at a deeper level than even words could express. Getting to this raw emotional depth is where I find my work to be most satisfying.

Dear friends,

I am writing you today because the LORD is good, alive, and powerfully moving among the peoples of the world! Be encouraged, for His mercies are new! And with each day comes new opportunities, like the opportunity I present to you: Near the end of last April, I experienced a deep craving in my heart to go on some ministry adventures with the LORD and began asking Him for ways to implement the gift of dance into the process. After a summer full of unexpected travels to different dance intensives here in the States, I received a letter of invitation from Belhaven University's Dance Department.

In the spring of 2014 (from May 3rd through June 9th), eight other students and I will be traveling to South Korea as part of a small dance company called Bal Malhada (Foot Speak). The goal of the trip is to present the Gospel message by way of the arts through dance presentations and workshops, lectures on the integration of faith and the arts, cultural exchanges with Korean public and private educational institutions (ranging from K-12, collegiate and graduate level facilities), serving in orphanages, and participating in Korea's International Contemporary Dance Festival and Competition while developing professional relationships and experiencing Korean culture.

I would love for you to be involved in what the LORD is doing, and you can help in different ways. The first would be through financial assistance. The approximate cost for the trip is $3,800 per individual. This amount would include travel, housing, and food for four and a half weeks. Together as a team, we have been engaging in fund raising efforts and will continue to do so throughout the 2013-14 academic school years for the purpose of decreasing the total cost for each student. If you would like to participate financially, please send me a private note and I will give you the appropriate information.

Secondly, I would love for you to join us in praying for our team and the lives that will be changed while we are in Korea. Please be praying for our company leaders, Cynthia Newland (Belhaven's Dance Department Chair) and Laura Morton (Dance Professor) as they plan the trip and build relationships with those overseas, getting us opportunities to present the Gospel message. Keep in prayer those who will be choreographing works for us as well as the dance company members - Carleigh Chitwood, Deborah and Rebecca Loo, Kaleb Reilly, Gabriel Speiller, Abigail Stauffer, McKenzie Williams, and myself. Your prayers are needed!

Thank you for your support!

Blessings in Jesus,
Matthew Palfenier
